Ah, moving season! Are you one of the many people this year who bought a new house, or who will rent a brand new apartment? Although this novelty is exciting, it can be stressful! Here are some things you might not have thought of to prepare for your day.
This step may seem really trivial, but it is VERY important, especially if your new home has several rooms. Want our best stuff? Use color coding on your boxes. First make a list of your rooms: living room, kitchen, master bedroom, bathroom, etc. Associate a color with each piece. Each box will thus have its color code with the part. This technique is super simple and effective, especially if there are several of you moving boxes.
Soap, shampoo, cough syrup, mouthwash; your personal pharmacy is overflowing with liquids! Don’t forget to check the caps of each product by dropping them in a box. If in doubt, use plastic wrap under the cork to make sure they are tightly sealed.
Yes, you read that right, make handles! Because it is difficult to handle heavy boxes, cut rectangles on 2 parallel sides. You will be able to insert your hands in it and it will be much easier to transport them.
Because you never know what awaits you on moving day, plan ahead! Fill a bag or box with a first aid kit, water bottles, a few screwdrivers, pliers, hand sanitizer, all purpose cleaner, 1 rag and some snacks. You will be able to face any eventuality!
Clothing, toys, decoration; out! You know in advance that your move is coming, don’t hesitate to give away or sell the things you no longer use. You will avoid cluttering your new space, but also moving unnecessary.
Admit you hadn’t thought of that! It is quite possible that your computer will be manipulated during this day. What would happen if it was damaged during the move? Have you backed up photos from your last family vacation? A backup of your hard drives (on an online cloud system or other) and your computer will allow you to keep all your beautiful memories!
We are not teaching you anything, the bulbs are very fragile and can break easily. By breaking, they will make glass which can be sharp for the movers, but for you too. Removing bulbs from lamps keeps them intact!
There will undoubtedly be dust, your mattress or your armchairs may be dropped or even dragged on the ground, these deserve to be protected. We sometimes forget how expensive they are, but above all central in our lives! To protect them from tears or dirt, use fitted sheets: one for the top, one for the bottom. You can also use plastic wrap to protect your cushions.
Depending on the type of refrigerator you have (check the manufacturer’s website), it may be necessary to unplug it for up to 2-3 days before transporting it. Think about it in your food and cooler management before D-Day.
Did you know that there are boxes designed especially for mirrors, posters or frames? Alternatively, a good trick is to use a flattened cardboard box. You will be able to slide your frame or your mirror there to protect it. Do not forget the mention FRAGILE.
For your plants, we advise you to give them VIP treatment and put them in your car, if possible. If not, consider staking them to help hold them securely in the moving truck if they are tall. If they are low but fragile, use an upside-down box or bin to protect them.
This stuff may be trivial, but what could be more frustrating than not having enough batteries to be able to coordinate everything over the phone. Be sure to charge your cell phone the day before and have your charger on hand throughout the day!
This is the place that gets the most use, so getting it organized first is essential. You will see, it will be much easier to manage the other parts well once the belly is full!
And hop to recycling every time a box is undone. You’ll avoid bogging down your new space, but you’ll find it encouraging to see the boxes disappear as they’re emptied.
Whether it’s painting, cleaning, undoing boxes or simply placing furniture, plan some music! The move will pass faster and you will be more dynamic!
They are essential for your mental health, breaks! The best trick is to stop before you even get tired…. or to quibble! Set a schedule for making boxes or unpacking them once you get there. With a specific schedule and small goals, you can enjoy your new space without being overloaded! Remember that it is essential to take care of yourself to start again better 🙂 Happy moving season everyone!
